The Manu Biosphere Reserve is a highly biodiverse but fragile ecosystem. Being home of several endangered species, like e.g. Spectacled Bear, Giant Otter, Harpy Eagle, Giant Anteater, Ocelot and Wooly Monkey, ecologically sustainable tourism in Manu is an imperative and a low tourism flow is favorable:

Visitors should be informed about rainforest conservation and favorable tourism activities need to be controlled (e.g. small groups, not get too close to animals, take garbage away, use biodegradable soaps).

Ecotourism also is an important economic activity for the inhabitants of the rainforest that allows its use without destroying the rainforest resources (areas with no tourism show a higher rate of timber extraction).
These reasons show the importance of involving local people in Manu tourism.
